At 81,000 mph, the asteroid swung around the Sun. Any Earth observers looking for big asteroids in its’ direction were blinded by the brilliant sunlight. Veritatis was discovered and forgotten many years ago. Ahead of it in the absolute silence is Earth. Older than the Earth itself, Veritatis was 10 miles wide and 16 miles long hardened by eons of heat and cold.
The earth’s gravity grabbed it and the asteroid accelerated. To the 12 people on the moon base, it was a huge blur. The Earth screams as Veritatis crashes down through the atmosphere. It hits; the Earth convulses and the extinction of mankind begins. Among the dangerous scientific experiments quarantined up on the moon base was a research project into time travel. 13 days and 5 hours after the asteroid impact, the first person to travel back in time escapes into the past to warn humanity.
Unfortunately she travels too far back in time and lands deep in jungle near Orobamba, the deserted city hiding the treasures of the Inca Empire. Alone and dying all she can do is chisel a warning into a temple’s stone wall. The jungle grows up over Orobamba and it disappears.
The legend of Orobamba’s gold and emeralds refuses to die; treasure hunters discover an invisible trail of diaries, journals and letters leading into the jungle. Of all the thousands venturing into the jungle, less than 20 find Orobamba and stumble back out of the jungle but even though they escape the person who escapes the jungle is different than the person who entered the jungle.
With his parents, 14 year old Steve Spencer went into the jungle; he came out an orphan with amnesia. Before she died, his mother inked a tattoo into his arm. It’s a warning for humanity. Fighting his way out of the jungle released something inside him. His amnesia and the tattoo haunt him. The jungle patiently waits for the boy to return. Its bait is Orobamba. Orobamba’s eeriness, its stone temples and palace, spooky tombs and dark pools, anacondas and jaguars leave scars on everyone who enters. Nobody goes back to Orobamba.
Now 18, Steve still is fighting the black hole in his head, the amnesia. He needs to remember that lost summer. He can’t sleep trying to remember if he ran away when his parents were killed or did he try to save them. He can’t remember if he was in Orobamba and how can he find it again. And the really big question, is there really a deadly asteroid out there? At night, he stares up at the ceiling wondering what’s so terrible his mind is protecting him from by forgetting it. Down the block, Raven Harrison’s found a clue that may cure Steve’s amnesia and she’s hoping what he’s forgotten may be everything she needs for her next novel. But is she using him or helping him? Ruthless treasure hunters will try to make him show them how to find Orobamba.
The clues to Orobamba are scattered in a pulp magazine story, photos, the remains of demolished buildings, and in a secret room where they discover something else came back from the future with the time traveler. It was an experiment that bonds with Steve and now Steve can fly, sort of. There's also a lot of collisions and blood and pain. The experiment’s technology is so advanced it seems it must come from hundreds of years in the future.
Steve and Raven must become relentless to stop the asteroid. But failure and pain and sacrifice may stop them. Raven may lose Chad, the near perfect boyfriend, or Steve or her life. Maybe her senior year is too intense.
This is the beginning of how they become relentless.

This book was magical. At first it was a bit hard to get into, not going to lie. But once you get past the first few chapters it really sucks you in. You feel for the characters, you become entranced by the mysteries, you lose yourself in the sheer wonder of Chicago past and present and ancient cities you wish you discovered yourself. The footnotes bring a sense of real life into the novel, making it seem as though the story itself could happen to any teenager or maybe even to you. I wish I could have kept reading after it was finished. Lord knows I am going to read it again!!! I highly recommend this novel, read it! Raven and Steve are waiting for you!Product details
